Having been in the industry for the last 25 years and working for one of the market leaders for the last 13, I now run a company that can give you all you need under one roof, your ‘one stop shop’. No more hassle with dealing with more than one company with numerous contracts and various engineers arriving unannounced, dozen’s of times throughout the year.
Having worked directly with customer’s, a great deal of the feedback I get is that people want assurances that they are getting a good service, one point of contact (in the UK) with a good response time, and value for money. With easy access to the internet, people are more aware of product costs and because of this, are not prepared to pay extortionate prices.
Dual Fire Protection is especially aim at educating and helping smaller companies (non domestic premises) comply with the Fire Safety Order 2005, which came into effect on 1st October 2006 for England and Wales. Similar provisions in N. Ireland and Scotland have extended this new Order to cover all of the UK.
Just a quick note - domestic dwellings, chiefly those let to tenants in England and Wales are covered by the Housing Act 2004, BS 5839 pt 6, this Standard was brought in as guidance for alarms in these properties. Please note that all communal areas are covered by the FSO as these are looked upon as non-domestic areas. BS 5839 pt 1 (the Standard for fire alarm installations in commercial premises) is the Standard to be used in these locations.
The first step is to have a Risk Assessment report carried out if you haven’t already had one. The Risk Assessment has to be written and logged if over 5 people are employed. If your business is small and you are confident that you understand what’s involved, you can do the assessment yourself, if you feel that you’re not, or are a larger business, it may mean carrying out a more detailed report by ourselves. The Risk Assessment will look at potential fire risks, fire safety precautions in place (or not as the case may be) and will conclude with an action plan for those areas that are non compliant. This will enable you to meet the requirements of the Fire Safety Order 2005. A Risk Assessment should be reviewed yearly or whenever there has been any significant change to the workplace, i.e. change of building layout or number of employees.
From the Risk Assessment action plan, I can provide all the safety requirements covering each individual service.
I have set up a small business package which covers everything that a small business should need to meet their fire safety needs. Only two visits a year to your premises are required to carry out the different maintenance services; fire-alarms and emergency lights every 6 months with extinguishers and PAT testing* serviced yearly, saving on costs for me, which I then pass on to you. If you only require one or two of the various services, that’s fine, a contract can be set up to suit whatever requirements you may have. Once the work is completed you will be issued with all the relevant British Standards certificates that can be logged and then shown to the appropriate authorities if required.
*Please note that there are no rigid guidelines for the frequency of PAT Testing, guidance can be found in the IEE code of Practice for Testing of Electrical Equipment 3rd Edition, with various factors determining the frequency including the environment, the type of equipment and whether it is used by the public.
